The Work

You are more than the stories you've been given.

We all carry stories about who we are. Stories can be shaped by family, culture, relationships, diagnoses, expectations, and experiences.

Some help us make sense of ourselves. Others can become limiting. Therapy can be a place to get curious about those stories and decide which ones still fit. As a queer, multiracial, and multicultural therapist, I know that identity can be both grounding and complex.

I also believe we are more than the identities we carry in this life. There is room to explore the parts of ourselves that exist beyond labels, including intuition, spirituality, connection, meaning, and the question of who we are beneath it all.

Meet Anabella

I'm a queer, multiracial, and multicultural therapist, and these identities help shape the way I understand people and the world around me. I grew up between different cultures, ways of seeing the world, and approaches to healing. My family taught me early on that there is more than one way to understand ourselves and our experiences.

My grandmother was a therapist, and I grew up surrounded by the healing arts and ceremony. I also know firsthand how powerful a therapeutic relationship can be. Having a space where you can let your walls come down, tell the truth, shed a few tears, and be fully human can change the way you relate to yourself and to your life.

I believe many of the ways we learn to survive make sense in the context of what we have lived through. At some point, though, a strategy that once protected us may no longer fit the life we are trying to create. Therapy can give us space to honor what got us here while becoming curious about what we want to carry forward. We can make more room for authenticity, find our voices, speak our truth in our relationships and communities, and build a life that feels more like our own.

I'm not here to tell you who you are; I’m here to help you remember who you are.

Therapy with Me

I believe transformation can be gentle. While it can feel intense and catalyzing, it can also be playful, amusing, and joyful. Therapy does not always have to mean digging into the hardest thing in the room. Sometimes we need to cry. Sometimes we need to laugh. Sometimes we need to sit with a contradiction, change our minds, try on a new way of seeing ourselves, or simply notice what feels good.

To me, being human means being messy, contradictory, inconsistent, and always changing. It means having emotions, making mistakes, trying on identities, taking them off, connecting with other people, and finding our place in the world. I want there to be room for all of that in therapy.

I’m warm, genuine, curious, affirming, and direct. Clients tell me they appreciate that I can hold up a mirror and gently point toward something they may not be seeing while still meeting them with compassion. I have worked with people through some very difficult experiences, and it takes a lot to scare or shake me. You do not need to protect me from your story. You can bring the parts of yourself you are proud of and the parts you are not. You can tell me about the thing you have never wanted to tell anyone. I will meet you with curiosity, not judgment.

Spirituality and Culture

Spirituality was not something I discovered later in life. It was part of how I understood the world growing up. My family brought different traditions and ways of relating to the natural world into my life, and I learned early that spirituality can be a deeply personal way of making meaning, finding connection, and understanding our place in the world.

I also know that some parts of ourselves can feel easier to share than others. Many spiritually-inclined people have learned to keep this part of themselves private when their experiences have been misunderstood or difficult to explain. I want therapy to be a place where you can bring the parts of yourself that feel easy to share, as well as the parts you have learned to reserve and hold closely.

If spirituality, intuition, connection with nature, ceremony, or other experiences are meaningful to you, there can be room for them here. You do not need to have a particular belief system, and you do not need to convince me of anything. I am interested in understanding what these experiences mean to you.

My Approach

I take a collaborative, client-centered approach to therapy. I do not believe there is one right way to heal, and I do not want to fit you into a particular method. Instead, we can draw from different approaches based on what you need, what you are experiencing, and what feels most supportive.

The approach belongs to you as much as it belongs to me.
We can try things, notice what helps, leave behind what does not, and adjust as we go. My goal is not to give you a formula for healing, but to help you develop a deeper relationship with yourself and greater freedom in how you move through the world.

Clinical Experience

My clinical experience includes work in jails, hospitals, inpatient psychiatric settings, permanent supportive housing, and community programs serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I’ve had the privilege of sitting alongside people through some of the hardest and most uncertain moments of their lives.

I have a particular interest in working with people with lived experience of psychosis, mania, addiction, and other experiences that can leave people feeling misunderstood. I’m especially interested in supporting people as they make sense of what they have been through, whether that means working through guilt or shame after an episode, rebuilding relationships, reconnecting with a sense of self, or finding a way to integrate an experience that changed how they see themselves and the world.

When someone trusts me enough to share what it is like to live inside their body and their mind, I consider it a privilege to listen and bear witness.
